Discovering October Roads: Fall Colors and Geology in Rural East Tennessee
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Tennessee Pr (October, 2001)
Average review score:

Unveiling Ancient Lands Beneath Tennessee's October FineryHarry Moore and Fred Brown form a wonderful team as they combine their diverse talents to offer both the "over" and "under" story of Eastern Tennessee's spectacular fall colors. Brown, a reporter for the Knoxville News-Sentinel, provides the sonorous phrases which perfectly frame Tennessee's reddish, golden autumn foliage. Moore, a Tennessee state geologist, offers a unique geological perspective on the ancient geological features that define the lands that stretch from the Cumberland Plateau all the way to the Blue Ridge Mountains.
With Discovering October Roads in hand, those who wander Tennessee's fiery hills will have the opportunity to view them through a lens of wonder and knowing normally reserved for just a few geology and biology majors. Moore and Brown's book is a delightful, easy read that offers days of pleasure to novice and professional alike.

An fun and informative book everyone will love!I purchased this book from the book sale at my younger sister's elementary school. I found it to be very informative about the solar system, and entertaining at the same time. It uses popular disney characters to teach children. This book would be a great opening to a unit on the Solar System, reguardless of the age level.

Divided Loyalties: Nationalism and Mass Politics in Syria at the Close of Empire
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (January, 1999)
Average review score:

An important contributionGelvin examines the role of popular agitation, intellectual elites, and political parties in the development of nationalism in Syria.
Particularly through his attention to popular action, Gelvin paints a far more complex picture of the development of nationalism in the Syria than we have seen before. His research has repurcussions for our understanding of early nationalist movements throughout the region. This is a work of importance for all students of nationalism or the Modern Middle East.

Excellent for a diving library. Good bookWe really like this book, and used it as a reference source for some of the information in our website (see email address). It has nice photographs, detailed descriptions of the bigger reefs, and is written with a fun, interesting tone. Definitely recommended.

Diving and Snorkeling Guide to the Red Sea
Published in Paperback by Pisces Books (December, 1994)
Average review score:

Excellent diving resourceThe book featured is an excellent Lonely Planet guide. It has been written taking into consideration low budget travellers and presents sites for divers in the Red Sea around locations including the popular Sharm el Sheikh and Ras Muhammed, Eliat and the Brothers. The information on each site includes: depth and visibility; required expertise; bottom terrain; currents; marine life; safety tips; and local dive shops. Most of the chapters are easy to read and actually are very well written. However, some of the tips are a little bit outdated (the book was written in 1994). In any case, it is cheap and very useful.

Division and Detente: The Germanies and Their Alliances
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (January, 1987)
Average review score:

Well thought out argument of a fascinating topicMr. Frey's book is both insightful and prescient. He tackles one of the most vexing topics of the post WW II era and arrives at a convicing conclusion. An impressive debut work by a graduate student. This will undoubtedly not be his last book.

Doctors for the Kingdom: The Work of the American Mission Hospitals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Historical Series of the Reformed Church in America)
Published in Hardcover by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (July, 2003)
Average review score:

Healing hands for the Middle EastAt a time when the Western world and the Middle East desperately need something to remind them that they can work and live together in harmony, along comes this inspiring and true account to warm your heart.
The book covers the story of missionary doctors from America who used their 'healing hands' to venture from their base in Bahrain into Saudi Arabia from 1913-1955. On first sight, therefore, you might think that this book is too specific to be enjoyed by anyone who isn't a missionary or a doctor in the Middle East. Not so fast!
What is endearing is that the book is written in such a way that, in my opinion, it appeals to a wider audience - those interested in Christian-Muslim relations, those with an understanding of the importance of the Middle East in today's world, and those who just want to enjoy good old unadultered history including academia.
What makes the book so much more enjoyable is that the author (himself a doctor) has directly quoted from many of the doctors' private diaries and memoirs, recounting such tales as when they had the privilege to treat the King of Saudi Arabia himself - and his family!
What often puts me off such books is their presentation (usually far too much text and nothing visual). The good news here is that there's a broad range of photos to bring alive the story even more.
All in all, it's a very pleasant and inspiring read - and I am sure that those who choose to buy this book will find themselves recounting some of its amazing stories...as indeed I am.
